Accessible Garden

The Accessible Garden project completely reimagined a spacious back garden that previously featured a steep incline, making it challenging for the homeowners to access and maintain. After one client experienced a life-changing stroke, the steep steps prevented the couple from enjoying their garden together; their only shared outdoor space was a small shaded area directly outside the home.

To overcome these obstacles, the design incorporated a series of gently sloped paths, shallow steps, and terraced levels, creating convenient resting points and seating areas throughout. These thoughtful elements ensured that both clients could fully access and appreciate every part of their garden.

Discreet accessibility aids were included, such as grab posts alongside the steps - offering support without the need for unattractive handrails - and raised beds along the pathways, which served as continuous handrails and spots for resting or steadying balance.

At the top of the garden, a spacious, covered dining area provides a comfortable, shaded location for family gatherings and entertaining. The sunniest corner features a compact vegetable garden and a shed for additional functionality.

Today, the garden is enjoyed throughout the year. It not only offers a relaxing retreat but has also become a valuable space for rehabilitation therapy and physiotherapy, helping improve quality of life and wellbeing.
