Front Garden for Wildlife

A front garden and driveway thoughtfully combined with stunning design elements to create a space that is both functional and beautiful.

The Front Garden for Wildlife is an inspiring example of how a front garden and driveway can be thoughtfully combined with stunning design elements to create a space that is both functional and beautiful. This project showcases how practical needs - such as parking and access - can work in harmony with aesthetic landscaping, resulting in a welcoming entrance that enhances both the home and its surroundings.

The clients were fortunate to have a generous front garden, but the area was not being used to its full potential. Originally, the garden featured a paved driveway running along the center, leading to the garage, and a wide expanse of lawn bordering the drive. While spacious, the layout lacked visual interest and opportunities for biodiversity.

To make the most of the space, we reimagined the layout to provide additional parking while seamlessly integrating planting beds and trees. These elements soften the hard surfaces and create a tranquil haven for wildlife, inviting birds, pollinators, and other creatures to thrive. The new design balances practicality and nature, making the garden not only more attractive but also more sustainable.

With climate change bringing more frequent and severe weather events, it’s essential to carefully consider the materials and surfaces used in garden design. Instead of relying solely on hard, sealed paving, we used gravel in areas where permeability is important, allowing excess rainwater to soak into the ground. Planting borders further help absorb runoff, improving the garden’s drainage and reducing the risk of flooding. This approach transforms what might otherwise be a paved-over space into a green, environmentally conscious landscape.

The planting scheme was specially designed to attract wildlife and pollinators, creating a vibrant and dynamic garden that offers year-round interest. Colorful flowers, native shrubs, and thoughtfully placed trees make the garden a pleasure to look at from both inside the house and the street, enhancing the curb appeal and providing a sense of connection to nature.
